How Hybrid Virtual Learning Works

DiscoveryFlex combines asynchronous online learning with synchronous opportunities for students to interact with teachers and peers.

Flexible Online Learning

Students complete teacher-facilitated online lessons, assignments, and activities through a learning environment designed to provide greater flexibility in how and when they engage with coursework.

Asynchronous learning may include:

  • Self-paced lessons and activities
  • Pre-recorded instructional content
  • Online discussions
  • Written assignments and analysis
  • Scheduled one-on-one feedback with teachers

Students can work through material with greater flexibility while still meeting course expectations and assignment deadlines.

Real-Time Teacher & Peer Interaction

Students also have opportunities for synchronous learning and support through real-time interaction with teachers and classmates.

These experiences may include:

  • Teacher office hours
  • Small-group instruction
  • Individual academic assistance
  • Group discussions and collaborative activities
  • Content review and clarification
  • Clubs and academic socialization

This combination allows students to benefit from the independence of online learning without eliminating access to teachers, classmates, or real-time academic support.

Rigorous Curriculum With Teacher Support

DiscoveryFlex students cover the same core concepts as their in-school peers through coursework adapted for an online learning environment.

Core instruction may include:

  • Louisiana Guidebooks for English Language Arts
  • enVision Mathematics
  • Bayou Bridges Social Studies
  • Amplify Science
  • Teacher-facilitated asynchronous lessons
  • Weekly office hours for each subject
  • Small-group and individual instructional assistance as needed

The hybrid model allows students to complete online coursework while still receiving support from certified teachers.

In-Person Support and Hands-On Learning

Discovery campuses offer Cypress Room spaces where students can receive in-person support from a certified teacher. Students can schedule virtual or in-person assistance as needed.

Cypress Room spaces also give students the opportunity to participate in optional hands-on activities, labs, and workshops that provide opportunities to apply concepts learned through their online coursework.

These in-person experiences are designed to complement the flexible virtual model rather than replace it, and attendance is not mandatory.

A Mentor Teacher for Every Student

Each DiscoveryFlex student is assigned a Mentor Teacher who serves as an additional point of contact for students, parents, and learning coaches.

Mentor Teachers are available by secure email, text, or phone during each school day and can provide support throughout the school year.

Support Beyond Core Instruction

DiscoveryFlex uses a multi-tiered approach to provide additional academic, behavioral, and social-emotional support when students need it.

Support may include:

  • Small-group academic interventions
  • Targeted instruction
  • Progress monitoring
  • Academic counseling
  • Behavioral counseling
  • Access to a social worker

The goal is to help students receive the level of support they need while continuing to participate in the DiscoveryFlex learning model.

Clubs and Student Experiences

DiscoveryFlex students may also have opportunities to participate in virtual and in-person clubs and extracurricular activities.

Options may include:

  • Beta Club
  • National Honor Society
  • STEM Club
  • Interest-based clubs
  • Other extracurricular activities and sports based on student interest and availability
